2009 Neighborhood Watch Awards of Excellence Winners

The National Sheriffs’ Association in partnership with the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department o f Justice presented the 5th Annual National Neighborhood Watch Awards of Excellence at the NSA Conference in Ft. Lauderdale this past June. Two law enforcement agencies and one neighborhood watch group were recognized for their extraordinary efforts to promote Neighborhood Watch in their community.

Akron Block Watch: Keeping Team Spirit Alive

The birthplace of such corporate giants as Goodyear and Firestone, Akron is a city built on industry and achievement. The name Akron is derived from a Greek word meaning “summit” (from the same root as “Acropolis”). It should, therefore, come as no surprise that this northern Ohio metropolis is home to a network of dedicated, high-achieving volunteers.

On January 20, 2009, Inauguration Day, an estimated 1.8 million Americans lined Pennsylvania Avenue , braving the bitter cold, to witness history in the making. Attendance at this historic celebration was unprecedented, shattering all past records, yet events unfolded without a hitch. Despite security concerns, the U.S. Secret Service the next day reported that Washington area law enforcement had made no arrests. Zero. As spectators, we rarely think about the myriad details that go into organizing special events—until something goes wrong! Seasoned planners, on the other hand, know that no detail can be left to chance.
